The 1847/6 Seated Liberty Half Dollar (Buy on eBay) is a rare variety of the series that exhibits remnants of the digits “1” and “46” in the field beneath the date. The obverse also exhibits doubling, most prominently on the vertical lines of the shield and the banner containing LIBERTY. Only early die states of the variety will exhibit both the underdate and the doubling, and these examples are the most desirable.
It is estimated that only 25 to 30 examples exist across all grades, with only a handful in mint state. Offerings are infrequent and virtually all show wear, indicating that this variety was quickly released into circulation, together with other 1847 half dollars. One of the finest known examples graded NGC MS62 sold for $17,625 in 2017.
